Q: I have a 2002 Subaru Outback and I am getting a lot of oil in the air filter. What would be the cause? PCV?
The hose coming from passenger side valve cover to the air box is oily.
A: One of 2 things are causing this. 1. The worst thing could be motor blow-by. Smoky oil coming up from the bottom of the engine, mostly through bad piston rings. This probably requires a combination of high mileage and/or abuse. 2. A breathing passage way under one of your valve covers is clogged due to not changing your oil enough or improperly.
Q: Where is the cabin filter on a 2002 Subaru Outback?
I am doing a tune up and other things to my car and I wanted to replace the cabin filter also, but I can't find it. Please help!
A: It should be behind the glovebox in the dash.. Not too complicated, just take out the glove box. It has to be pushed in on both sides, then unlatched at the bottom. Look for the filter somewhere up in there.
Q: Do you own a 2000-2002 Subaru outback sport impreza?
I am car shopping, and would like to hear your experience with it, do you like it? Why? Do you consider it reliable? Do you have any problems with it? Would you buy it again? Thanks in advance for your answers.........
A: i tried an outback sport impreza and i thought it was a good car. It will be very reliable and great in the snow. I recommend purchasing an outback with the 2.5L motor, instead of the 2.2L motor that the older models came with. The extra power is great for driving up hills in a fully loaded car.
I currently own a WRX wagon, which is similar to the outback in many ways and here are the things I like: reliability, AWD for winter, cargo space of the wagon (compared to a sedan)
here are the things I don't like: interior is fine but not as upscale as some other small cars like the mazda3, not much soundproofing
If you know how to drive a manual transmission I strongly recommend you try an Impreza WRX wagon before you buy the outback. The extra power in the WRX might make you think twice about the outback!
I will likely get an STi as my next car. I am a big fan of how turbocharged subarus drive
Q: Is it bad if I put auto transmission fluid into the gearbox oil on a 2002 subaru outback?
A: What are your referencing as "Gear Box"?
In the steering gearbox?
Then YES YOU CAN it will be fine if you use ATF. Auto trans fluid is merely a hydraulic fluid that is dyed red for detection purposes... same thing as power steering fluid.
If you mean "Differential" or "Manual Trans" then NO.
These other answerers seem to think you mean in the rear end... if that is what you mean, then obviously no... gear oil and hydraulic oil are two very different beasts, and you will burn the rear end, or trans, up in a heart beat.
- Good Luck!
Q: 2002 Subaru Outback problems after head gasket replaced?
2002 Outback w/30k mils
Am looking to buy this car, but head gasket replaced two weeks ago. Once replaced, wondering if other problems might show up? Wasn't drag raced. Reseach shows that this is problem in some other 2002 Outbacks (Phase 2 2.5L engine).
A: What problems are you having and who replaced the gasket to begin with? Why was it replaced? Subaru had an issue with those did you not try to have it done under warranty? Did you try the coolant conditioner before replacing?
Q: where can i find a replacement rear left tailight for a 2002 subaru outback?
drivers side rear taillight.
A: The dealer will be able to order one for you, but a junk yard will be much cheaper.
Q: 2002 Subaru Outback?
Does anybody know just how far down the rear windows roll on a 2002 Subaru Outback? Like, halfway? Three-quarters? Thanks.
A: They roll down a little more than 2/3 of the way, and are slanted when all the way down. They are slanted this way because when a child is in the back seat, the rear of the window is higher than the front, allowing more air flow while preventing the child from putting their hands (or other things) out the window. Hope that helps. The only way this might change is if this is not a Legacy Outback. If it is a Impreza Outback, also known as a Outback Sport, then the windows will roll a little further that the other.
Q: What causes my 2002 Outback Subaru to shut down?
Dealer mechanic says it's not the fuel pump and put in an ignition relay...still shuts down sporadically.
A: We need more detail into exactly what happens when it shuts off. Check the wiring to the fuel pump or the fuel pump relay, check the fuel filter. Check wires, plugs. Is there a check engine light on while the car is running? If there is get it scanned to retrieve a code to correct the problem.
Q: Who wants to buy my 2002 Subaru "Outback" Sport 5 dr htchbck, silver, 90K mi (essentially a beefed up Impreza)?
The floormats are brand new. Sorry, no pictures.
Here's one I found online .. it's better looking in person http://autonet.ca/images/usedcars/thumbs/1538110_3_thumb.jpg
I don't expect anyone to buy it - just looking for your smart-azz answers.
A: Only trouble with the 'bugeye' Impreza is they look so suprised, like someone has inserted something large and uncomfortable in the boot...................
Q: Are pulsar plugs any good for a Subaru 2002 outback?
A: I have heard some people have trouble with those but that's for WRX's. I would just stick to the OEM ones. Probably NGK
Q: i have a subaru outback 2002 were is the fuel filter located?
A: If you are looking at the motor from the front, it is to the right of the second intake box right above the throttle body. Between the box and the top of the right shock tower you'll see a little black can with two nozzles poking out pointing in opposite directions. First disconnect the Neg. on the battery. Undo the clamp holding the fuel filter and remove the plastic clip on it holding two other hoses and move out of the way. The actual hoses connected to the fuel filter are a major pain to get off. You'll really have to work at them and be careful not to damage them. Just get the correct part for your car at the store to see what it looks like and you'll see it in the engine bay.
Q: How reliable is a 2002 used Subaru Outback- head gaskets, etc.?
A: They are unbelievable reliable. Consumer reports lists Subaru, Toyota and Honda as the most reliable manufacturers. I have never had to replace a head gasket on a Subaru unless someone has allowed the timing belt to go too long and it broke. I strongly recommend Subaru for reliability.
Q: Where do I find performance parts for a 2002 Subaru Legacy Outback?
Looking for full supercharger/turbo kits, intercooler, etc.
A: First off, I am a 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX owner.
Do not, I repeat, do NOT go to any AutoZone, Kragen or other local auto supply store.
First, visit www.NASIOC.com
This will provide you some information in the Legacy Outback section. Register! And you will take in the wealth of info. there. You'll definetly find some answers for performance parts there. If not, ask and they will refer you!
Q: Temperature Fluctuations on a 2002 Subaru outback.?
This first showed up last summer. I was driving on a long trip and I noticed the temp gauge rising pretty quickly. It was about 87F outside and I had the AC on. I ran the rest of the trip without AC and didn't really have any issues. The rest of the summer wasn't that hot so it never came back.
Now that summer is coming around again, the problem seems to have returned, but is a little worse. Of course, the first time I noticed it was when I had the AC on. Now it seems to climb whenever I drive on a long hill. I have never let it get into the red zone. If it looks like it will be going that high, I turn on the heat and it drops right away.
I have verified the fans are working and that the coolant level is OK. (I did add a little bit of coolant to top it off, but it didn't seem to have an effect.)
It is due for the big 165k maint next week. I'm just wondering if it is only climbing when under stress, could it be the thermostat and not the head gasket?
Thanks for the quick responses. I am terrible with keeping to the recommended maintenance schedule. It has not had any of the routine maintenance other than oil changes in about 60K miles. That's part of the reason why I am bringing it in to them. I know I missed a couple biggies when it comes to scheduled stuff so I'm already looking at a nice big bill without a blown head gasket
a bit more info based on answers so far:
last coolant flush was about 70K miles ago, also had a new thermometer then
it is a 2.5L
A: Have you been taking it in for your routine service? It so they should be replacing thermostats. It is common to see thermostat failure in the suburu. is it a 2.2 or the 2.5? I have done numerous head gasket repairs on thr 2.5 engine. Unfortinatly the true way of figuring out if its a headgasket is to put it on a scope to measure exhaust gasses and crank gasses.Normaly, however a headgasket will tend to overheat all the time and not just intermitanly...so im sure you can cross that idea out. Also in my experiences as a suburu tech i have seen counltess radiators with sludge buildup... it may just need to be flushed....if you replace the thermostat...ps. if you replace thermostat, please drain radiator as it will soak you as soon as you take out second bolt
Q: Computer down Subaru Impreza Outback Sport 2002?
Few drops of water got into the computer - and it's fried. Is there no way around ordering a new computer from the dealership since - "they have to reset the computer" - as my shop is telling me? Thanks for any input!
A: You can get an ECU out of any 02 to 04 non turbo Impreza. That includes 2.5 RS' too. There is no reason to have to buy one from the dealer. As long as it hasn't been tampered with. Any compatible ECU will just plug in and run fine. I would find a new mechanic if that's the kind of info it gives. Who knows what other moronic stuff they tell people.
