Q: I have a question about a 1996 Subaru Outback 2.5 liter that is running hot. Can some one help?
I have had the radiator patched and it is full of water & antifreeze but still running hot. Does anyone have any ideas about what this could be?
A: Did you check your oil level?
Are you sure the thermostat is opening properly at the temperature?
If your raditator fluid is greenish brown, your HG may be leaking.
When you said Hot, is that the temperature meter goes to H? or hot as 200 degree F?
Q: What fuse do I have to change to get the dash lights to work on a 1996 Subaru Legacy Outback?
I have a 1996 Subaru Legacy outack and after a recant repair the lights in the dash do not work. I do not have an owners manual and need to know what fuse I need to change to get the lights to come on again. Any help is very much apprecitad. Thanks!!
I have already tried the dimmer switch, and it is not that.
A: Check the dimmer switch for your dash lights first. By the left bottom side of your steering wheel you will find the fuse panel, it has a diagram of which fuse is for what.
Q: Is a BRAND NEW 1996 Subaru Outback Thermostat infallible?
A: Probably not.
Q: How do you replace a starter in a 1996 Subaru Legacy Outback?
When we try to start the car, it makes a clicking sound. The lights and everything work fine, so the battery is in good shape. I just need to know how to install the starter...and by the way, it couldn't be anything else, could it?
A: the starter is located on the drivers side rear of engine, somewhat below the brake master cylinder. its failry easy to remove.
Q: 1996 Subaru leagcy outback My parking lights are stuck on?
I started my car this morning and I noticed when I shut it off the parking lights were still on. So I checked the switch on the dash and now it does not light up when the button is pushed but the parking lights and tail lights are stuck on and is draining my battery. Please help.
A: yep, sounds like the switch. i would say, pull teh switch and use a multimeter to determine if it is in fact eh switch by testing continuity between the switch terminals....but i am sure most people would give me a blank stare. if you're not qualified to do this, a shop shouldn't charge more than a half hour labor plus a new switch price (if its the switch).
Q: What things will cause the"Check Engine" light to go on, on a Subaru Outback 1996?
The light goes off and on. It does not stay on.
A: Many, many things can cause CEL to come on.
CEL should be renamed = "please have the engine code scanned" light.
But itself it means nothing.
===
Go to Autozone and have the code scanned (free). Then come back here and ask more question with the code.
Good Luck...
Q: My 1996 Subaru Outback shows check engine light on the Dash. Can anyone tell me what this light means.?
A: It means the computer has detected a fault that could cause emmissions to rise above one and a half times the federal standard. Theres a lot of things that can turn it on.
If its flashing the vehicle has a misfire and needs to be fixed asap.
Have the code read and go from there.
Q: 1996 subaru outback leaky axle shaft seal?
i wanted to no if this was an easy fix or if i would need to take it to the shop
A: It's best to replace the axle. Dirt can get into the axle and damage it and furthermore it's been running without grease. Your taking everything apart so why not put a new axle in there.
Replacing an front axle shaft on a Subaru is one of the easiest of cars to do. It took about 25 min to replace the left front axle on my '96 Subaru Legacy AWD wagon. The differential does not need to be disassembled/drained contrary to what the above poster wrote. However bring it to a garage if you don't feel comfortable taking your front end apart or don't have the right tools. Keep in mind many garages around the country are not that familiar with Subaru's unless if you live here in the northeast so you may be overcharged.
Q: Is a 1996 Subaru legacy outback thermostat infallible?
Could this thermostat stay closed once in a rare while for whatever reason?
A: yes it can for several reason 1 could be dirt blocking the spring from opening this part is 12 years old nothing lasts forever get your radiator flushed to clean out your cooling system and have the t-stat changed this should solve your problem.
Q: i am considering buying a 1996 subaru outback with 140k miles on it. whats the reputation on this car?
what can i expect to be having to fixed soon?
A: 140,000 miles is a lot any thing could go wrong at any time.
Q: 1996 subaru outback, brake replacements...?
hey, i need to change the brakes on all four wheels of my subaru outback, however i dont know what i need to buy and not sure the difference between shoes and pads and rotors and drums, which ones do i need...
A: better off asking here or other Subaru forum. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?p=16844146
i think you will find you have disc brakes on all 4 wheels. but if you can't tell disc brakes from drum brakes you probably can't do the work yourself. the garage you bring it to will know what to get. if you are hearing a grinding noise when you step on the brakes, the rotors will need to be turned smooth or replaced. if the rotors are OK, all you need to buy are a set of pads for each wheel, might be a good idea to have your brake fluid flushed out and replaced, some shops have a machine to do this, sometimes old brake fluid will cause the caliper to stick, in which case it won't retract all the way when you release the pedal and the new pads will just wear down after a few thousand miles. sometimes a caliper will have to be rebuilt, I have an outback and had to get my front calipers rebuilt because they were sticking, I know a great Subaru mechanic in north central Massachusetts. good luck
Q: I'm thinking about buying a 1996 Subaru Outback. I'd appreciate some feedback i.e. are they a good car etc..
A: Subaru make some damn good cars, They are very reliable if a little thirsty in comparison to their 2wd equivalent (e.g. ford mondeo, honda accord etc etc). As with any car it will respond best to good treatment. Some owners think that because these cars are quite tolerant of the occasional missed service they need never spend anything on thier upkeep. Basically beware of abused examples!
The Outback is a very good car indeed, basically a befed up legacy with all the legacy refinements. On high milers listen for a clicking on hard turns (front driveshafts wear) and ticking from the engine (hydraulic tappets/ piston slap) especially from cold. This would usually be due to poor adherance to oil change schedules. If it has a towbar fitted, check that it has not been overworked towing regular heavy trailers/caravans. Check especially that the automatic gearbox oil (ATF) has been changed often and that it is red and does not smell burnt. Subaru automatic gearboxes were made mostly of cheese and old socks in the early to mid nineties and the heat/load gets to them (Ask anyone with an SVX how many gearboxes their car has had......)
Lastly, good luck. If you pick the right car it will give you many years of reliable service!
Q: 1996 Subaru Outback engine misfires, what could be the reason?
The engine misfires when taken up to 60mph cold, after not running for a number of hours. Took the car to one dealership and they replaced all the electrical, including sparks. Still the same problem. Second dealership replaced the distributor. Exact same problem. Any thoughts?
So far as I know, no one checked the coolant temp sensor. Both dealerships were quite confident that they had found the problem, or a way to get my money. When it misfires the engine revs up all of a sudden and then runs rough for a minute or two. Does that seem like what would happen if you are right?
No, did not have a tune up, all the electrical had been replaced just 3,000 miles earlier...what would a tune up have done that was not already done?
A: Sounds like cam or valve trouble. Did you tune it up after the distributor replacement?
Q: How long does it take to change a timing belt and water pump in a 1996 2.5 liter subaru outback?
A: If you've never done one before, 3-4 hours. An experienced mechanic could do it in 2.
