Q: How much should it cost to replace blown head gaskets in a 1991 subaru legacy?

A: The part itself is pretty cheap if you can find a friend or family that knows what there doing to do it cause its going to cost you well over a grand because they have to take the top part of the motor apart. my 95 camaro head gasket blew and it cost me 1300 to fix when the part was like 30 bucks if that. Good Luck

Q: How can i get more performance out of my 1991 subaru legacy 1.8gl (carberetor)without spending big bucks?

A: Not to be mean, but you can't. You could do suspension performance, or power, but with power you have to do suspension. You pretty much have to do an engine swap, and replace your entire suspension to see any real gains. Otherwise you can spend upwards of $2,000 for bolt ons that will give you maybe 20hp....at most....Header, exhaust, intake, ignition...etc. In my opinion...don't waste your hard earned money.

Q: I need to replace the muffler on my 1991 Subaru Legacy wagon, but I don't know which one to get.?
I went to one shop and they said for my particular car I needed a special, heavy-duty muffler that is fairly expensive. I went to a second shop and they said they could fit a normal stock muffler on for $80 (much cheaper), and that it didn't need a special one. Help! Which shop is right?

A: The second one is fine, the car is alreayd 16 yrs old and probably has the original muffler on it, that is all you need. The heavy duty is overkill.

Q: i have a 1991 subaru legacy will the ignitor cause the car from starting?

A: yes,if its got a bad ignitor it will not start and run, that will keep it from ever staring at all, good luck with it.

Q: 1991 Subaru Legacy won't start?
I have a 1991 Subaru Legacy and it hasn't given me to many problems. Today I went out and drove around for a while with no problems at all. I went to leave again later and when I turned the key, I got nothing from the engine. My lights turned on, the radio started, and even my air conditioning went on, but my engine made no atempt to turn over. I would appreciate any insight you can give me on this as I have no clue what to do. Sorry should have written in here, battery and alternator are good, I checked them already, it's a good thing too, they were replaced a few months ago

A: If its an auto try run it through the gears and then try start it in neutral. If that dont work then its not the tranny switch. If it has engine disablement try turning that off and starting it. It could be your starter motor needs replacing or even your battery. Your battery may have enough power to run everything else but not enough for the starter. If this is the case get a jump start to see if that works. If so then its your battery. When you get it replaced get them to check your alternater is ok. If its a manual then clutch it.

Q: I have a 1991 subaru legacy and how do I set the timing???

A: No need, setting the timing is a thing of the past. Today such as your 1991 Subie, the computer handlers this task in real time, adjusting for bad gas and on some cars changes in temperature.

Q: 1991 SUBARU LEGACY OVERHEATS ALL THE TIME. Thermostat works, and i think sensor is good. whats wrong?

A: Make sure your head gasket has not blown, is there any water in the oil? Is there alot of pressure in the cooling system?

Q: Dashboard recess too small for new car head unit (1991 subaru liberty/legacy)?
hi, just bought my first car (woo!) a 1991 subaru liberty/legacy. With the help of a mate, who works for a car mechanic who specialises in car electronics, i installed two new pioneer speakers in the back. When i went to try and install the head unit we found the unit to be too big (wide) for the recess in the dash (height is perfect) I know i should have actually cared about the size, but i picked the unit up in the boxing day sales for a bargain. its a pioneer DEH2950MP model. its only a little too wide by about half a centimetre on either side, the dashboard not removed. havent removed the dash yet. My mate is going to ask his boss in about 3 days about what to do, if i have to get it prefessionally installed. just asking incase i can escape the cost if its easy enough. btw, the stock head unit is an old clarion tape player :P cheers :D

A: To install this product, you’ll have to modify your vehicle. Minor filing (less than a sixteenth of an inch) of your car's trim panel is required. Use the brackets that came with your factory stereo to install your new receiver. Your vehicle came with either a 2" or 3" pocket below the factory radio. To install a new receiver, you'll need the 3" pocket that's available from your automobile dealer.

Q: Subaru Legacy Torque controlling?
I am wanting to buy a project car and i found an AWD 1991 Subaru Legacy with turbo. Before i buy i was wondering if there is a part of some sort that will allow me to adjust the torque in the front and back. Like give the front 10% of the torque and the rear 90% to make it more like a RWD car. Or is there just an easy way to get ride of the front axle and just convert it to RWD.

A: without alot of time and money your only option is to pop the front axle's from the center diff to get a RWD type car and its what most "dorifto" drifter's do.

Q: I need cheap reliable subaru legacy parts?
my 1991 legacy 4wd blew the rear Air suspension(?) bellows, I cannt find them for under 150.00 each side!I love this car but cannt afford those prices will go to pull your own parts yards? Any Ideas? Live in Minnesota

A: Yes, I love mine too....but in this case, I would remove the air bags and replace them with coil springs. It's not a difficult modification...just buy the springs for the standard model for around 30 bucks each. Good luck.

Q: Auto-saavy people, can you help me with my car trouble?
I drive a 1991 Subaru Legacy, but it only has 59,000 miles on it. Still, lately I have had trouble starting it. It will start, but I have to turn the key, and wait about 10 minutes before it will finally start. It seems to be getting longer and longer a wait time. The "hot/cold" guage dips below the 'C,' and I'm thinking the engine is too cold, so what do I need in order to keep the temperature up? Or is it something else entirely? Please help. I can't afford a new car at all.

A: When you say it takes ten minutes to start, is the starter turning slowly or normally? If it is slow, it could be that your battery or alternator has gone bad, resulting in a battery that is having trouble turning your engine over to start it. If it is cranking normally for ten minutes - first of all, you can't continuously engage your starter without expecting it to burn up and fail. Engage it for about 5-10 seconds at a time with 30 second intervals in between to keep it cool. Your starting problem could be a multitude of things, but guessing since it's a 1991, you could have fouled spark plugs, bad wires, bad ignition coil, etc. I would start by taking it in for a tune-up. While this may cost you over $100, it may help you out considerably. Good luck!

Q: Risks of broken speed sensor on my car?
i have a 1991 subaru legacy and my michanic told me that someone must have rigged my left hand speed sensor up to the right side for some reason, which makes my ABS not work. he couldnt legally say it was fine, but told me my normal brakes would work fine, so i drive it now. but whats the risks? could my spedometer be off or something more serious?

A: You really should have your ABS system repaired. Your normal braking will not really be affected by the ABS system not working unless you are towing a trailer (the ABS system in a lot of cars modulate how much pressure goes to the rear brakes). The real problem is that when you NEED your ABS system to work, such as in a skid, the ABS system wont function. I would also ask for a second opinion about your "rigging" that takes a lot of doing to repair a problem instead of fixing it right

Q: how to fix and repair frozen brakes?
I have a 1991 Subaru Legacy LS and the front left brake is frozen, we've replaced the calipers and the brake hose and it still freezes until the bleeder is released. as soon as we push the brakes again, the caliper locks up and won't release. The ABS has been disconnected due to malfunctioning

A: You have a faulty master cilinder. Possibly master cylinder release valve is not working. When you press on the brake, the fluid pressurizes. When you release the brake pedal the brake fluid is suppose to be released back into the master cylinder. Have someone press the brake pedal down and release it. As soon as they take their foot off the pedal, crack the bleeder at the brake cylinder. (It should not be pressurized) If it is, try the same thing at the MASTER cylinder. If, there is pressure there also, after releasing the brake, then you have a bad master cylinder. If there is no pressure, then you may have a plugged brake line, or faulty proportioning valve.
