Q: how do i fix the big ends/pistons on a 1993 subaru impreza?
I think the bottom end of the pistons on my 93 subaru impreza are knocking I need to know how to fix it

A: If you mean the rod bearings---you have to remove engine.Take off heads and split the block. Not an easy job for the amateur and you need some special tools. Piston have to come out so you might as well rering and hone. It is not very common for Subbies to knock from the bearings, but it is not unusual for the pistons to knock. You should get the opinion of a Tech familiar with Subbies before throwing parts at it.

Q: HELP!! 1993 subaru impreza. where can i find the iat sensor?
i wanted to put a chip in my 93 subaru impreza.. it says most cars have a plug with two wires but im not seeing that.. i just see a box on my intake with 4 wires coming out of it.. i just need to know which of the four wires are are for the iat. a diagram or picture would be best.. but i can probably understand if you told me . thanx for your answers! IAT .. Intake Air Temperature

A: Well the intake air sensor us usually on the intake tube going from the air box to the throttle body, the four wires you are most lileky looking at are the wires for the Mass Airflow Sensor. I believe the "chip" you actually bought (most likely is from eBay for $5) is actually a resistor that falses the computer into thinking the intake air temprature is colder than the actual air temp, this increases the Air / Fuel mix the performance gains are nominal as it does not affect timing etc. Look to an actual ECU chip for real performance gains. Superchips . com is one of the best on the market.

I have a Subaru Impreza wrx sti (1993model) I am in desperate need to find parts due to a lady driving into the back of my car.I am in the Herts/north london areas. A: Local salvage yards are listed in American telephone directories under Automobiles--Parts--Used and Rebuilt Also, auto parts stores carry rebuilt (restored and renewed) alternators, starters, etc. at a much cheaper price than new from the dealer, and they come with a warranty and are very reliable. Best regards, Mike

Q: a 1993 subaru impreza...?
i am looking to purchase this vehicle, but it needs a new clutch.. the price is $700.. i don't know the mileage, the condition, but for a impreza, would it be worth it for 700? also, do they just have imprezas.. not imprezas wrx or whatever.. right? it's like the base of the imprezas.. sorry im confused on that part.. please help me!! thank you

A: Let's answer this in reverse order. Help is on the way! Subaru is the make. Impreza is the model. WRX, RS, L, LS, LX, etc are trims. Check out the link to Consumer Guide for a better understanding. When they say you need a clutch, all you need is the disk. A kit is overkill, especially since it looks like you're trying to keep things cost-effective. A disk will cost you $75 at one of the many online auto parts stores. I recommend Auto Parts Way but they're all about the same. The trouble is, you can't install a clutch without at least one specialized tool: clutch alignment tool. By the very nature of your question, I don't think you're ready to replace the clutch yourself, so don't buy the tool or the part. Unfortunately, if you take it to a mechanic, they'll most likely feed you some line about insurance and dealing with certain qualified parts dealers etc. They just want to charge you ridiculous overhead for the exact same part. So you're looking at anywhere from $200 to $500 for the parts & labor. So is it worth it? Not a chance. By the time you've paid for the car and repairs, you've paid over $900 for an average Impreza. From the price, I'd guess you're looking at an L, which is the absolute base model and doesn't have AWD. (Yes, there was a time when Subaru had FWD.) The big advantage of a Subaru is the all-season driveability. If it's front-wheel drive, you may as well get a Corolla or Civic. They're more reliable! Trust me. I have a 2001 Impreza which I drive every day. I wouldn't trade it for anything, but that doesn't change the fact that Toyota and Honda make better commuter cars.

Q: Cost of cutting key, Subaru Impreza 1993?
Dealers are closed right now... I doubt that ther's a VATS system on the car, but there could be some kind of electrical doodad I don't know about, even in 1993. Does anyone know if the key is just a simple one or more fancy and expensive?

A: You can get it cut wherever they cut keys.

Q: Sudden loud noise- roaring engine of Subaru Impreza 1993. Guessing exhaust- car appt Thurs?
This car was a great car once, I think. I just got it two months ago, and little things have been going wrong a lot. The car was fine this morning, after our second "winter" frost, when I drove it three times. I get the car home, go to run back out for errands, and it's suddenly loud as can be. It was just in the shop last week for brakes, rotors (which they knew I knew), and a tinny rattling sound which was a loose clamp for the exhaust system. Four days go by and there's an exhaust problem- it's just roaring like there's no muffler at all. If you can help me look to see that it's not just a loose pipe, as opposed to something I'm going to get charged a lot for, as though something was totally broken, I would really appreciate it. It would be helpful to be able to understand what they tell me- I used to have a couple of friends in college, who would do all my car maintenance for free, and teach me a little. So I think I can understand this, too. Thanks!

A: One problem I can think of that happened to me last year is a cracked muffler, my car was really loud until I replaced it. Another thing you mentioned was a loose clamp. If the clamp is off before the muffler and it doesn't have cats on it then your problem could be the exhaust running through strait pipes. My guess is the cold weather cracked the muffler. Just take it into a gas station or garage and have them jack it up and tell you the problem and how much it will cost.

Q: Oil Leak on a Subaru 1993?
Hi my cars been leaking oil about 1/4 of a cup a day and it never used to we don't drive carelessly and try to take care of it but its been leaking oil slowly from the front of the engine its a good car besides the leak. cant afford to fix it properly right now is there a quick fix? The car is a 1993 Subaru Impreza AWD Thanks.

A: There is no quick fix besides parking over something to catch the oil and keep it topped off. There are plenty of common oil leak sources that are easily fixed. The most common is the valve cover gaskets. These are exposed to pressure from gravity 24/7 and even more when the engine is on. These are actually very cheap and easy to fix. Other common areas for leaks are the camshaft seals and crank seals. These are not incredibly difficult, but require taking the front of the engine off, including timing belt and accessories. There are no additives or anything you can do to make a "quick fix". The cheapest and only quick fix is to keep adding oil. Especially because of the valve cover gaskets, older Subarus are known to leak oil. Many call this "marking their territory". :)

Q: FWD/4WS vs. RWD vs. AWD? (Honda Prelude vs Lexus SC400 vs Subaru Impreza)?
I am considering either a 1992-1996 Honda Prelude 4-cylinder VTEC, an FWD car with 4-wheel steering, a RWD Lexus SC400 V8, or an AWD Subaru Impreza 1993-200? (Not neccessarily WRX or STi). Which would be the best buy for a man who may need to pick up a younger brother from school and would like some degree of sportiness or weekend fun as well? Maybe a bit of off-roading? I don't have a family or plan to start one for a long time. Please take both gas prices and fun factor into account. Does the 4ws in the prelude outweigh its deficiencies as a FWD car against an RWD or AWD car?

A: almost all cars that have AWD are best suited for snow or maybe a good dirt road. if your needing a real off road vehicle your best bet will be a Subaru or Nissan Xterra or Toyota 4Runner you'd get stuck in the mud with a prelude or a Lexus.

Q: How do I fix wheels rubbing the guard on my Impreza?
Without changing wheels! I have had 17in wheels on my car for well over a year and love them...apart from one small detail. They're too wide! When I have more than one person sitting in the back seat the clearance between the wheel and the guard becomes like 3mm (down from 120mm) and it does some damage. I have rolled the inside of the guards up without any luck. I'm wondering if there is a way to get harder springs/shock absorbers so they won't budge too much with extra weight, sacrificing a smooth ride is OK with me. Any help is appreciated. The car is a 1993 Subaru Impreza that is entirely unmodified apart from the 17in wheels. Thanks

A: Your going to want to get some camber plates so you are able to run some camber in the rear so they tuck inside instead of rubbing on the fender. RCE makes some good ones and they usually do the trick, you will need to get an alignment so they can adjust your car so that the wheels dont rub. Springs wont do much for you since they still have some play but if you upgrade struts and spring that will help stiffen your ride and wont let the rear end go so far down. Coilovers do the same but they are a tad more expensive.
