Q: how to install tail light on 1999 forester subaru?
Can anyone provide me with web link for instructions for replacing
1999 subaru forester tail light (tail light assembly)
I'm talking about the whole multi colored plastic assembly not just the bulbs.
Thanks in advance
I need to know how to remove the old (cracked) tail light assembly
and how to install a new one--which I purchased.
Any links to instructions on the web, or can anyone give me specific instructions.
Thanks in advance
A: The fact that this person said "how to install tail light on 1999 forester subaru" indicates to me that they dont want to take it too a mechanic, so why did the previous responder say "take it too a mechanic"?
Anyways,
You really dont need pictures, because its very easy.
#1.Obviously you open the hatch, and when you look towards the taillights, you will see plastic clips that hold the carpet in. Take a flathead screw driver and pop them out. (They are cheaply made, so dont be suprised if they break, you can pick up packs of new ones at autozone for $3.)
#2. After pulling the carpet back, you will see a blue (or gray) wiring harness that goes to the back ot the taillights. Press in the clip, and pull the harness apart.
#3. Next, you will see 4 10mm bolts, remove them, and the tail light will fall out
thats all there is too it.
Q: What kind of mileage can I expect from a 1998 or 1999 Subaru Forester?
I'm shopping for a used SUV that doesn't drink gas for breakfast, lunch & dinner. Model suggestions would be great!
A: It should get combined highway and city 30 mpg. As long as your foot is not heavy on the pedal and you drive properly(stopping, starting, idling) It has the best safety rating of them all. Stay away from the DOHC 1998 model.
Q: How do i CHANGE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER IN A 1999 SUBARU FORESTER?
A: There is a big filter labeled 'transmission' it is external and can be accessed without removing the transmission.
the procedure is as follows:
1) raise the car
2) put a big pan under the transmission, remove the drain bolt and oil filter and drain the oil (this could take a long time)
3) replace the drain bolt (buy a new crush washer) and filter (buy a new filter!!!)
4) pump the oil into the gearbox through the gearbox dipstick. be very sure you do not overfill the gearbox.
alternatively, a shop should be able to do this for you for around $75 labor
Q: I have a 1999 Subaru Forester. Which parts should i replace in order for the car to last longer?
A: Replace the engine oil with synblend which is both conventional and synthetic oil. Replace the coolant every 2 years. Replace the transmission fluid every 50000 miles. And most important of all, replace the timing belt every 105,000 miles.
Q: How do I replace a fuel filter on a 1999 subaru forester? thank you?
A: there is a silver canister under the hood on the driver side close to the top of the strut with 2 lines going to it. remove the lines and then the filter is held in with a clip on the side of the filter
Q: Why does my car run hot but does not overheat? 1999 Subaru Forester shows high temperature reading when loaded
Symptoms: temperature rises to red zone, especially when hot outside and when car is under load (such as heavy weight, stop-and-go traffic, or traversing hills). Car does not overheat; temperature resumes to normal once load is removed. Radiator cap has been replaced - Subaru has done a pressure test and a carbon monoxide test on my cooling system. It has been backflushed and refilled. Does not lose antifreeze outside the system. Subaru said head gasket is OK. Symptoms do not occur daily, only when above is true. Afterward, and when car has cooled, overflow tank is generally full to the top. Please let me know if you would like any more detail. Thank you!
A: You need a new thermostat

Q: Should I buy a Toyota 4Runner, Subaru Outback (or Forester), or a Volkswagen Passat?
I just moved to Austin, TX from Alaska. I had a 1997 Subaru Outback that I loved but I sold it before moving.
Now I'm looking for a new car here. I've narrowed it down to these choices:
1997 Toyota 4Runner with 100K miles
1997 Subaru Legacy (sedan) with 61K miles
1999 Subaru Outback (wagon) or Forester 90K miles
1999 Volkswagen Passat 87K miles
I'm looking for something reliable that will last me another 100K miles.
I prefer something with the space of an SUV or wagon but can do without.
I know the Subaru's last long but the gas mileage isn't that great for just a car...might as well get an SUV.
I like the 4Runner but I can only afford the 1997 with 100K miles (cause they never lose their value for goodness sake) and the mileage kinda scares me. The Passat is very sharp, great looking interior, fun to drive, etc. but I'm a little worried about the reliability.
Which would be the best considering the circumstances?
A: Avoid the Passat like it was the plague, you will not get to 100k on it without a major repair. The electrical system is problematic, and a nightmare to fix. The engines also had known problems with gumming up and ignition coils. They also can not be worked on by many small shops as they require expensive tools and diagnostics. VW dealers are not known for being inexpensive or particularly sympathetic.
The Subaru's run forever, and have very few problem areas. The Forester will get worse mileage than the Legacy's, and probably feel a little slower. It was regarded as the best small SUV back in the day though. All Subaru's tend to burn a little oil (in fairness most boxer style motors do), but checking it every 1000 or so miles and adding a little oil if needed will solve that problem. Legacy sedans are few and far between and are harder to sell. Really did not distinguish itself as a sedan.
4Runners are great and do run forever, and mileage is not a huge worry if it was taken care of. You will get lousy mileage and they ride kinda harsh and do not handle well. It is basically a 4 door truck.
You loved you old Subaru, so go with what you know.
Q: How does the dim (hi/lo) wire work in an automotive circuit?
1999 Subaru Forester. Turn headlights OFF, dash displays are bright, turn headlights ON, dash displays are dim. There is a lead that controls this (for example, behind the clock), but how does it work? The reason I'm asking is that I have a 2004 Forester stereo installed and no where to attach this lead. Thank you.
A: Car manufacturers do not build audio equipment for their cars by themselves. It is build by radio manufacturers, and the most a car manufacturer can customize is usually the bezel showing the car's name. Subaru must have chosen a "good deal" for the radio, which simply doesn't have the option (i.e. the connector) to attach that lead you're talking about. For example, Acura RL (Bose Radio = expensive) does dim the radio illumination, but the Jeep Cherokee doesn't. To change that would mean you would have to dig deep into your audio system, find the circuitry for the dial illumination, measure whether presently used voltage is compatible with what comes out of the "control wire" you found, disconnect the existing illumination circuitry, hook up the control wire, fiddle it all through the housing......
Is it all worth it?
Q: What is the BEST small SUV? Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V or Ford ESCAPE???
I need to get a new car to replace my old wagon (1994 Saturn) soon and looking for a reliable small SUV with good gas milleage.
I'm deciding between 4 Suvs : Subaru Forester with 115,000 mi., leather interior - $4,000, 1997 Toyota RAV 4 with 160,000 mi. - $4,200,1999 HONDA CRV LX 2WD with 126,000 mi and 2002 Ford Escape with 125,000 mi. (this car from a local dealer). I found the lists in craigslist los Angeles. I have 2 dogs, one small and one bigs so I need to consider about the cargo area as well?
Please help me with the pros and cons of these car. Thank you very much.
I forgot to mention "1998" Subaru Forester.
A: The Subaru is the answer. I sell Subarus for a living but being you are in LA, my answer is unbiased. 95% of all Subies bought in the last 10 years are still on the road today. The average owner keeps their subie for min 7years. The boxer engine with the symmetrical all wheel drive is great in all situations dry, wet, or frozen. The repair costs are no higher than any of the three. But it does surpass the rest in safety. If you want more subie info email me at subiejaxman@yahoo.com. I also own one so I can talk.
Q: I have a 1999 Subaru completely stock. I was wondering if i could buy after market STI parts and put them on?
I thinking about upgrading the engine as well as the exhaust. i was wondering if Forester and STI parts would work in conjunction and not cause any problems.
I have a 1999 Subaru Forester
A: STI parts are interchangeable around the range, however I wouldn't recommend it unless its just a fun "project" because if it goes to pieces, its going to be baddddd...however the forester is basically an over sized Impreza so you shouldnt have to many troubles.
